my first rectal abscess drainage!

Resident: "Ok Phil. spread his butt cheeks and start making stabbing motions with the knife."
Patient: " Are you a med student?"
Me: "Yes sir!"
Patient: "Aw shiiit. Oh wait, wait......aaaaaa aarrrgh..........aaaahhhhhhhhh!"

were you stabbing with a needle or a ten blade? and where exactly was the abscess? and did the patient have morphine?

blade. not morphine. lidocaine, IM push with epi. due to the acidic nature of abscesses, lidocaine has poor penetration into tissues (gets protonated, thus becoming polar, unable to cross cell membranes) and thus was apparently not adequate for pain control. I however, was not in charge of that...;)
