I was explaining the difference between "a shit" and "the shit" to somebody the other day. Whoever wrote that letter is THE shit. Actually, A.N. Wilson is also THE shit for having a sense of humor about it. Obscure literary feuds are THE shit in general.
I have to say, I wondered why A. N. Wilson didn't suspect something when the last sentence starts "Tinkerty-tonk, my darling."
