The remarkably effective rhetorical tactics of first-graders
Joe: Miss Wilson, my socks are wet.
Me: Why are your socks wet?
Joe: Because I was outside.
Me: What were you doing outside?
Joe: I was sitting in the giant puddle.
Me: So what happens when you sit in giant puddles?
Joe: Your socks get wet.
Me: So are you going to sit in giant puddles any more?
Joe: (pauses, realizes where this is going, changes subject) Miss Wilson, my socks are wet.
Later -
Me (to Joe's teacher): Does he think I keep extra socks for six-year-olds in my desk, or what?
Joe (from down the hall): If you don't, you should.
